THE HINDU SCIENCE OF MARRIAGE

The Hindu marriage is based not only on sentiments, but on high religious and deep scientific truths as well. According to the great sage Manu -

"Na nishkrayvisargamya bhartbharyya vimuchhyate,
 Ebang dharm vijaneeyah prakprajapati nimmirtam."

which means,

'The relation between the husband and the wife can never be severed. Such is the Law created by the almighty Lord of Creatures. We know it.'

There were eight modes of marriage amongst the Hindus in the very ancient time; but seven of them have now become obsolete. The Prajapatya mode of marriage is the only one prevailing.

'Mantras' chanted at the wedding ceremony

In traditional Hindu marriages, after Agnihotra (consecrating the family-fire), performed by the bridegroom, the sacred Gayatri (prayer to God) mantra was uttered, followed by this speech by the father of the bride in all solemnity -

"Pratva mrinchami varungasya pashachhen
 Twavdnat savita susheva,
 Ritasya yoni sukritasya loketrishtang
 Twang saha patya dadhami."

which means,

'O daughter, I this day set asunder the loving bond with which glorious Savita bound thee to me. I this day set thee asunder of that bond of Varuna which is mine by right. What is mine by Truth - a home of Righteousness - I place thee there today with your husband to live in happiness forever.'

As a riposte, the father of the groom said -

"Ihaiva stang ma vi yeesta vishvamayurvashrut Crorti putren mu mirmidamani swe gathe."

which means,

'O bride, forever live with thy husband. Never part, remain united for Eternity. Living in thy own home, be cheerful, merry, and happy, and play with thy children and grand-children.'

Later, the bride and the groom said in unison -

"Samajatu visve deva samapo hridayani nee
Sang matrikha sang dhata samudeshtri dadhatu nee."

which means,

'The Gods of the Universe, heart to heart, make us united forever. Matharishwa, Dhata, Vagdevi, unite us - make us one.'

The father of the bride then invited all present to come and see and bless the happy couple.... Suggestions
